Sustainability refers to the ability to maintain or continue a certain process or state indefinitely, with a particular focus on ensuring that resource use does not deplete the resources or harm the environment, thus allowing them to remain available for future generations. It encompasses three main pillars:

1. Environmental Sustainability: This involves managing natural resources so that we do not deplete them faster than they can regenerate. It aims to preserve the environment, reduce pollution, and combat climate change to ensure that the Earth can support future generations.

2. Economic Sustainability: Economic systems must be structured in such a way that they can operate efficiently and profitably over the long term without negatively impacting social and environmental systems. This involves practices that support long-term economic growth without negatively impacting social, environmental, and cultural aspects.

3. Social Sustainability:  This pillar focuses on maintaining and improving social quality with concepts such as social equity, livability, health equity, community development, and education. It aims to create a system that supports strong, vibrant communities and allows people to coexist harmoniously and to meet their needs without compromising the quality of life of future generations.

Sustainability is essentially about meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It requires a holistic approach that integrates environmental, economic, and social considerations to achieve development that is sustainable in all aspects.
